Joyce Crabtree (Art and Music)
Since I was a wee one sitting on my grandmother’s knee, I have loved “the art of fiber” – crocheting, knitting, sewing, tatting, quilting, rug hooking and all types of art work.
I have studied with the Masters – Pearl McGown, Elizabeth Zimmerman, Joan Moshimer, Grace Butler, Hallie Hall and the quilting women of Idaho Falls.
My original creations have won awards at local, regional and national exhibitions including a “Best of Show.” My fiber art creations are featured at Florida Museum of Women Artists in Deland, FL and at a juried gift shop, Artisans on fifth, in the Mount Dora Center for the Arts building. I have also been featured in newspapers and magazines. For 20 years I taught rug hooking “cats” at certified rug hooking schools which resulted in my selling an original pattern “Crabtree Cats” to a pattern maker.
Fibers and their textures inspire me to create – not only with threads but with music. I may see color, but through the colors, I hear music - spiritual music.
I have studied piano and music since the age of 4 but only recently discovered its voice…..my musical voice within. Retirement does that! If you stop and listen, nature will sing to you. I love the stillness of the night when the voice of spirit gives me words, gives me a tune, or gives me a beautiful poem. When we open up to the voices of the universe, the universe will provide.
My songs have been performed at several area churches including the Unity Church in Orlando, FL. I’m in the process of creating a songbook - a first for my retirement years but not the last of my musical ventures.
In these retirement years, may my hands continue to move over the keys and may my mind continue to create the fiber arts and music for all to enjoy.
